Using
an installer (.exe)
The ideal way to release your map when your done is through an executing
file like we have for patches, demos etc. The main advantages for
this are that it makes it extremely easy for the user to install and
doesn't put them off downloading it, all they have to do is click
a few times and not think too much about it, another advantage is
it gives your map a more professional feel.
Making an installer is surprisingly easy if you know the right program
to use, I recommend installmaker, it has a simple wizard interface.
The only snag is to remember to place your pk3 in another folder,
just for the installer, because you need to direct it to a folder,
it will still only pack up the pk3 (its not really much of a snag).
The good thing about install maker is you can choose full screen install
or mini, and you can have your readme and even add a picture and its
really easy, just follow the wizard. It does have an advert at the
end, but not a picture one, just a simple one, which is fair enough,
you can buy the product to remove it if you want. Most people wont
need to follow my example here, its just a wizard interface and its
easy to use, but if you want you can follow my example below.

Instructions
It doesnt really need a tutorial, but just as an example here is what
I did for my own map:
| 1. |
First
off I placed my pk3 in a folder, I just placed it in my unzipped
folder but you can make a new one or whatever, it really doesnt
matter, its just for the installer to know where to look and
only put the pk3 in.
Also if you want a small install image, make that now, 128x280
in bmp form. I just chose a screenshot of my map.
|
| 2. |

So I clicked next :P
|
| 3. |

I have placed my pk3 into that folder, c:\unzipped, so place
your pk3 in a folder on its own.
|
| 4. |

I entered my map name for my title, obviously you can enter
anything you want
|
| 5. |

Since this is a custom map people wont want start menu icons
or shortcuts as there pointless for this. So I left it all blank
and clicked next.
|
| 6. |

I just pasted in my readme file here and also I clicked preview
to have a look, then I clicked next, leave blank if you dont
want to add a readme or anything
|
| 7. |

I chose small because I think its nicer :)
|
| 8. |

I made a bmp file before I started this installer 128x280, so
I directed it to the place I saved it. I had used a screenshot
of my map, I clicked on preview to show what my image looks
like:

|
| 9. |

Most people have wolf installed in the default directory, so
I just browsed to it myself (in windows explorer, I have show
full address on in toolbar) and copied and pasted the name.
If you dont know what I mean just type it in like it says above.
|
| 10. |

This is not needed so just leave blank and click next
|
| 11. |

I unticked this box because all people have to do is delete
the pk3, plus the uninstall program is just called "uninstall"
and it adds start menu shortcuts and I think people will find
it annoying and pointless.
|
| 12. |

Now, click finish and wait a few secs and another window will
pop up
|
| 13. |

Give it a name, mines my map name, click save, then it will
pack it all up. Now you turn it off and test it out, all should
be fine and dandy!
