ET -
Phone Home, Teas Ready
ET,
enemy territory, "lets have a game of et" sounds strange
to me, and first thoughts are of the movie that no film critic
has ever given less that 5 stars or whatever there full star
system is, if you find a review where the reviewer hasn't had
an orgasm whilst watching it, call the papers and tell them
to hold the front page! For me ET was a film about a long necked
plastic doll that skated about on wheels and had about as much
charm as a rotten fly and with annoying kids about for old people
to go "orrrr arent they cute". For me it was a pure
horror film, how it was ever rated PG I will never know.

Film critics
arent really people are they (thought this is meant to be a ET preview,
what is he going on about, - just read it damn you!) every year they
vote for "the best film of all time" yet no films from this
century ever appear, number 1 spot always goes to "its a wonderful
life" or some film where umbrellas spinning is considered a special
effect , films like lord of the rings which cost more to make, took
longer to make, took more imagination, more people, more thoughts,
more dedicated people, 2 years of peoples life's and more money at
the box office dont even feature why do critics only ever put old
black and white films full of guys singing and where "gay"
means happy in there list?, , ill tell you why, because they dont
like technology and they like talking crap, and you can talk a lot
of crap about films like its a wonderful life because its full of
it, for me film critics that rate that film as number 1 of all time
simply arent being fair are they, and whats more a few of them dont
see it as their opinion rather as "fact".
I doubt there will ever be a new film in these charts, maybe its because
lord of rings is in colour and you cant have any sort of technology
in films to have it in an all time list, its gotta be black and white,
have umbrellas and generally be made before any of us were born. As
for ET himself anyone with a glowing red finger has serious problems,
I shudder to think where he must of been poking that to get it that
red.
In the films defence it has been a while since I saw them, but ET
is still scary. In fact im not even sure ive seen its a wonderful
life, maybe just the start of the thing and the singing made me sick.
Anyway you probably didnt come here to talk about et the movie, or
maybe you did, who knows. One thing for sure is that enemy territory
was an expansion pack and now it is a full game...
New Features
Engineer
Depending on where you read your news theres either a new engineer
or the current engi is updated, and one most interesting features
is that engineers can build, suppose thats going to be a nightmare
to script, but you can build bridges and I guess anything the mapper
has in mind, unless its a case of a few items like bridges, guard
towers and the like he can also apparently make mounted guns. Its
an amazing feature really and hopefully it will work out well. You
can also plant mines in which people cant see but you will be able
to, I imagine they will be limited supply otherwise it would get crazy,
probably have 2 or 3 I would imagine. Also comes a grenade launcher
as a new weapon for the engi, but no spanner in sight :(

We can see above the bridge outlines where you still need to build

I think this is an engi planting a mine, its not 100% clear
Covert Ops/Spy
The sneaky class enters the fray, ala tfc the spy can disguise himself
as the other team, theres no details to whether or not he will be
able to faint death and lie on the ground playing dead, but still
a spy is a welcome edition I think, you just cant beat a good old
stabbing in the back. But, a few people might not be happy with spies
and you can see in tfc people sometimes complaining, only really because
its so sneaky, one thing from tfc we dont want though is hw guys!
Another feature of the spy is that he can spot the engineers mines,
so the spy is a spy in the true sense, he can sniff out danger with
his binocs.
Apparently in the new ET you can go prone (lie on ground flat) which
seems odd to me, (although im all for it) the game is a bit fast paced
for that but it will mean better snipering (doubt that is actually
a word, but hey!), because lets face it the sniper in rtcw is not
very much fun and everyone likes to sniper, so ET has implemented
a new sniper rifle, which maybe the spy can only use, I have read
that the solider no longer has the sniper rifle so I guess the spy
is the only person who can, I dont see why theres no pure sniper class
with one of those helmets with grass, leaves and vines on (you think
they'd get told off for having grass in their helmet's) but there
you go.
Soldier Class
One thing thats new for the solider is that the sniper rifle will
be replaced with the paratrooper sniper rifle from the sp game of
rtcw and he will also get a machine gun (omg hw guy!) so maybe a hw
guy is imminent, the scourge of tfc maybe entering the wolf era, *sobs*.
We will just have to wait and see how powerful he is, apparently though
you will have to lie down, hopefully you will have to deploy the gun
then it wont be like the horrors of the hw guy for tfc, although some
people do like him but I dont see ET being like that, effectively
the soldier might be seen as the machine gunner class and sniper class
in one.
Skills System
I guess this is one thing that makes it a lot different from rtcw,
you build up skills the longer you play a class, but only over the
map time, so say if you play as a spy your sniping ability will improve
over the map time, apparently this can go onto the next map if its
like a cycle of maps so thats interesting. Engis will also be able
to build better etc, and I would guess medics will be able to heal
faster since thats there skill. So its an impressive system, although
if you join the server mid map your going to be at rather a disadvantage.
New objectives
Also on the new features list is new objectives, with things such
as escort and hostage rescue and protecting various people, only slight
worry here is protecting people is not really much fun, as we have
seen in the popular cs mod, probably 90% of people didnt like escorting
a vip so hopefully ET will differ from this to avoid it being a server
killer. I myself like vip maps but if most people dont I think you
have to go with the majority.
New maps
Fifteen new maps are reported to be included, but they are tricky
fellows so im betting some of these will be from the single player
converted over, but splash damage are working on the maps so maybe
not, although just about all of there maps are single player wolf
ones converted over, not saying this is a bad thing just how it is.
Hopefully we will see more variety in the maps, maybe some African
ones or jungle ones would be good, there is a deserty one being made
apparently, one thing medal of honor did was keep the map themes varied
where as rtcw mainly went for a grey dark depressive look for most
maps.

New overhead view
Also talked about is a new commander style viewpoint, so you can see
where everyone is, if you have played tribes 2 you will know in that
it has a similar feature. You can also have both the map on screen
and your view apparently, so you can see where you heading and what
not.
Bots
Gray matter are working on the bots, so at least its not "lets
have everything scripted" nerve, I myself am wondering since
so much of quake 3 code was left in rtcw that he has used the bot
code from quake 3, I think the bots in quake 3 are pretty good so
hopefully there up to that standard, with the game being complex with
classes its a pretty big task making the bots good, so we will have
to wait and see, it is good for us mappers though hopefully, it means
in theory at least more people will play our maps because they can
with bots and we can test with bots too.
Vehicles
I have heard that there are vehicles but I dont think you can drive
them, which to me is a massive let down considering battlefield 1942
has them, as will hidden and dangerous 2 and other war games that
keep coming out are meant to have them, so I would of thought it only
right that ET has driveable vehicles, but it doesnt look like we will
have, however you can jump on them as shown below, I guess its going
to have scripting tank movement in the map below, something which
you can already do in rtcw.

Conclusion
Currently this is all the information there is about ET just about
and the release date is set to "later this year" or "Christmas"
I would think they would rather release at Christmas like wolf was,
rather than early next year.
I think ET looks really good, you can see why they have decided to
make it a full game, there implementing a lot of new features, but
then again this still could of been an add on, at the end of the day
its still rtcw with new features so in most peoples book its an add
on, the new classes however seem brilliant and the skills system seems
interesting as does going prone, the only downside is are they really
going the whole hog, say there was no rtcw, in todays climate with
so much competition in ww2 themed games driveable vehicles really
makes the game stand out from the crowd, but I guess we cant have
everything! but I think we can all look forward to an vastly improved
rtcw going by the name Enemy Territory.
ET, down right pr0nographic
